in 1953, US President Eisenhower said, "Modern weapons take food from the hungry and shelter from the homeless: Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children." The American leaders who followed him took no notice and have waged endless war around the world killing millions of people, at a human and financial cost that Eisenhower would have thought was inconceivable. The US military expenditure is $700 billion a year, which is 43 percent of the world's total spending on armed forces, and more than the next ten highest spending countries combined. Barack Obama has attacked more countries than any previous president -- Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Libya, Yemen and Somalia.
