The American leaders who followed him took no notice and have waged endless war around the world killing millions of people, at a human and financial cost that Eisenhower would have thought was inconceivable.
The US military expenditure is $700 billion a year, which is 43 percent of the world's total spending on armed forces, and more than the next ten highest spending countries combined.
